The World Cup Begins – A Global Opportunity Beyond the Pitch
As another FIFA World Cup gets underway, millions of people around the world will once again come together to celebrate the game we all love. The tournament is always a showcase of elite football, unforgettable moments and national pride, but for me, its biggest impact often comes long after the final whistle.
One of my biggest hopes for this World Cup is that the host nations are able to use the event as a catalyst for long-term football development. Hosting a major tournament creates a unique opportunity to invest in facilities, strengthen coaching education, increase participation and inspire the next generation of players.
Too often, World Cups leave behind incredible stadiums but limited long-term growth. My hope is that this tournament becomes a platform for sustainable development — building stronger grassroots programmes, improving player pathways and creating more opportunities for local coaches and young footballers.
Having worked in football environments across the UK, Canada, the USA and China, I have seen first-hand how meaningful investment in coach education and community programmes can transform football cultures over time.
As supporters, we will enjoy the football over the coming weeks. But hopefully, years from now, we will also look back and see this World Cup as the moment the host countries accelerated the future of their own game.
Enjoy the tournament.
